The
Top 10 Reasons to Remain Silent
How often do we speak and instantly regret it? My solution
is to develop as
guidelines the principles uniquely important for us individually,
principles
enabling us to recognise those occasions when remaining silent
is important,
sometimes vitally so. Reflecting our values, these principles
allow us to
rest more easily, more confident that when testing times arise
we shall know
the alternative which is right for us. I believe that even
going through the
necessary creation process increases the chances of our acting
spontaneously
in accordance with our integrity.
And the advantages? Implemented, these are the decisions which
strengthen
us, stimulate our personal growth and facilitate refreshing
sleep free from
anxiety and remorse. The following are my 'Top Ten Times to
Remain Silent,'
what are yours?
1. When words are about to be spoken in anger
and might be regretted.
2. When it has been said before and is not
worth repeating.
3. To justify one's behaviour, of which one
is not proud, by citing someone
else's.
4. To avoid inflicting unconstructive criticism.
5. When silence resonates and words are empty.
6. When honourable actions are more expressive than words.
7. After indicating graciously that the question oversteps
one's boundaries.
8. When the moment is perfect without words.
9. When the heart is full and speaking would be a drain.
10. When to speak would only be to boast.
